Google AI Overviews
and your Melbourne business

An AI Overview is a generated summary Google shows for some queries, drawing on and linking to sources. Ranking well for a query does not put you in one — the two are related but not the same thing — and nobody outside Google can tell you how sources are selected. What you can do is measure the conditions on your side: whether your business is understood as a clear entity, whether your content is accessible and quotable, whether your claims are supported anywhere other than your own website, and whether anything contradictory about you is in circulation.

OG01 measures observable conditions. It does not speak for Google and makes no claim about how Google ranks anything.

The gap

Why a strong ranking is not a ticket

The intuition most businesses arrive with is that an AI Overview is a summary of the top results, so a top result is included by definition. That intuition does not survive contact with the format. An Overview is composed prose with a handful of linked sources, and the number of sources it can carry is far smaller than the number of pages that rank for the query. Being on the list is not the same as being one of the few things the summary was built from.

There is a second reason, and it is the one that catches technically strong Melbourne sites. A page that ranks was indexed at some point. A page used as a source has to be usable now, in the form it is served, by something reading it to extract a specific statement. Sites that assemble their substance in the browser, bury an answer in a design element, or leave the actual claim implied rather than written can rank perfectly well and still offer nothing liftable.

What we are not going to tell you
We are not going to list ranking factors for AI Overviews, because Google has not given anyone outside the company a way to verify such a list, and a confident list of unverifiable factors is the single most common piece of bad advice in this category. We are also not going to show you a case study claiming a business appeared in an Overview because of work performed on it, because attribution of that kind cannot be demonstrated from outside.
What we will do is measure conditions that are observable, report them with the signal behind each one, and measure them again after you change something.
Assessing it

Four conditions you can actually measure

Authority

Whether anything other than you supports what you say. A business whose every claim originates and terminates on its own website has provided no way for a system to gain confidence in that claim. OG01 measures where you are referenced, described or listed by sources that are not you, and where a central claim has no external support at all.

Source clarity

Whether a specific question is specifically answered somewhere on your site, in a passage that stands on its own. This is a writing and structure property more than a technical one: a page that circles a topic for six paragraphs contains the answer but does not state it, and there is nothing to lift.

Entity understanding

Whether your organisation resolves to one unambiguous thing. Consistent naming, location and description across your own site and the records that describe you; structured data that says what kind of organisation this is; no lingering variants from an old brand or a former address. Ambiguity is expensive here, because a summary that names a business is making an implicit claim about which business it means.

Accessible content

Whether your pages can be fetched and parsed at all. This is the prerequisite the rest depends on, and it fails more often than people expect — bot-protection rules added during an incident, an aggressive firewall configuration, or substance that only exists after client-side rendering. If OG01 cannot fetch your site, the reading comes back Not Rated rather than as a low score, and clearing the block becomes the first finding.

Australian context

What is specific about assessing this from Australia

Results differ by country and by the wording of the query, so a Melbourne business checking how it appears needs to check from an Australian context and with the language its customers actually use — suburb names, Australian spellings, and the local term for the service rather than the international one. A check run from elsewhere, or in generic global phrasing, is answering a question nobody local is asking.

OG01 operates from Byron Bay in northern New South Wales rather than from Victoria. There is no OG01 Melbourne office and we are not going to imply one. The measurement is performed against your domain from outside and the work is coordinated remotely, which is how it would be done regardless. Australian business identifiers and records are part of what a reading looks at when it checks whether your organisation resolves cleanly, and Australian customers are priced in Australian dollars.

Melbourne situations

Where the four conditions fail locally

Agencies
An agency is asked by a Melbourne client why a competitor "shows up in the AI box" and they do not. Without a measurement, the only available answers are guesses. With one, the conversation moves to which of the four conditions is failing and what it would cost to change.
Professional services
A Melbourne advisory firm publishes long thought-leadership pieces that never state a plain answer to the question the title asks. Source clarity fails on almost every page, while authority and entity understanding are fine — an unusual profile, and one that points squarely at editorial work.
Ecommerce
A Melbourne retailer's specification detail loads only when a tab is opened. Accessible content fails, which makes source clarity untestable, which makes everything downstream of it unreliable. Fixing the render order changes what is measurable, not just what scores well.
Hospitality
A Melbourne venue trades under one name, is registered under another and is listed under a third on two aggregators. Entity understanding fails, and the failure is invisible from inside the business, because every individual record looks correct to whoever maintains it.
Real estate
A Melbourne agency's suburb pages are largely listing feeds with no standing content, so there is no statement about the area for anything to draw on. Authority is reasonable and source clarity has nothing to work with, which is a content gap rather than a technical one.
Questions

Google AI Overviews questions

Can OG01 get my business into Google AI Overviews?
No. Nobody can promise that, and we will not. Google decides what appears in an Overview and does not expose that decision to anyone outside the company. What OG01 does is measure the conditions on your side — authority, source clarity, entity understanding and accessible content — report which are failing, and measure them again after you change them.
If I rank on page one, why am I not in the AI Overview?
Ranking and being used as a source are related but different. An Overview is composed prose with a small number of linked sources, far fewer than the number of pages that rank for a query, and a source has to be usable in the form it is served right now. Pages that rank well can still offer nothing liftable — for example when the substance is assembled in the browser or the answer is implied rather than written.
Does OG01 know Google's ranking factors for AI Overviews?
No, and neither does anyone else outside Google. We deliberately do not publish a factor list, because an unverifiable list presented confidently is the most common bad advice in this area. Everything OG01 reports is a measurement of something observable, with the signal behind it shown.
Do AI Overviews appear for every search?
No. They appear for some queries and not others, and what appears can differ by country and by how a question is worded. That is why a Melbourne business should check using the phrasing and location its own customers use, rather than a generic global query.
Should I block Google's AI crawlers to protect my content?
That is a genuine commercial decision rather than a technical one, and it has a cost worth understanding: access controls aimed at one kind of use frequently reduce retrieval reach as well, and a site that cannot be read cannot be cited. OG01 will report what your current configuration allows and what it blocks so the decision is made with the trade-off visible, rather than discovered later.
How would I prove that a change helped?
By measuring the same conditions before and after with an unchanged method, which is what rescoring does. That proves the conditions changed. It does not prove Google behaved differently as a result, and any supplier claiming to have proven that is claiming an attribution nobody outside Google can demonstrate.
