AI SEO, AEO and GEO,
without the jargon

All three terms describe the same shift: search systems increasingly answer a question instead of returning a list, and being named in the answer is a different problem from ranking on the list. AI SEO is the broad label, AEO (answer-engine optimisation) emphasises being the source an answer is built from, and GEO (generative-engine optimisation) emphasises the systems that generate prose rather than retrieve links. They overlap heavily, none of them replaces established SEO, and the honest version of all three is measurable rather than theoretical.

A rating in about ninety seconds, then the gaps behind it.

Terminology

Three names, one underlying change

It is worth being blunt about this: the three terms are not three disciplines with clean boundaries. They are three vocabularies that emerged at roughly the same time, from different corners of the industry, describing the same problem. Where they differ is emphasis.

AI SEO

The umbrella term. It usually means doing search work with the assumption that a large share of the audience will never see a results page, because an assistant or an AI summary will answer them first. In practice it covers everything below.

Answer-engine optimisation (AEO)

Emphasises being the thing an answer is built from. That pushes attention onto the form of your content — whether a question is actually answered on the page, in a passage that can be lifted and attributed — and onto whether your claims are corroborated somewhere a system can check. An answer engine that cannot verify a claim usually declines to make it.

Generative-engine optimisation (GEO)

Emphasises the generative systems specifically, where the output is prose composed on the spot rather than a retrieved snippet. The practical emphasis lands on entity clarity: a generative system writing a sentence about your category has to decide who is safe to name, and that decision is heavily influenced by how unambiguously each candidate resolves.

If someone offers you all three as separate services with separate fees, ask what is measured differently between them. The answer is usually nothing.

The relationship

What established SEO still does, and where it stops

Existing SEO work is not wasted here, and a great deal of it carries straight over. Crawlability, site performance, sensible information architecture, content that genuinely addresses a question, and links from sources that mean something — all of that still matters, and several of those things matter more now, because retrieval is less forgiving than a ranking algorithm that can rescue a mediocre page with enough authority behind it.

Where it stops is the objective. SEO optimises for a position, and position is a proxy for being chosen. In an answer, there is no position to hold — a system either has enough confidence in you to name you or it writes the sentence without you. That is why a Melbourne business can hold first-page positions across its core terms and be entirely absent from the assistant answers its customers are actually reading.

Carries over unchanged
Technical health, retrievable pages, real answers to real questions, credible external references, and consistent business information.
Needs new attention
Entity resolution, corroboration of specific claims, quotable passage structure, structured data that says what you are, and what stale information about you is circulating elsewhere.
Stops being the goal
Position for its own sake, keyword density, and any tactic whose only mechanism is influencing where you land on a list.
Never becomes possible
Controlling what a model says. Nobody outside those companies can see the ranking logic, and any method sold as doing so is selling a theory.
Evidence first

Score, fix, rescore — in that order

The reason this category attracts bad work is that its results are hard to see. Nobody has a rank-tracker for "was I named in an answer this week", so the industry substitutes activity for evidence and invoices for the activity. OG01's answer is to measure first, act second and measure again third.

  • Score. A free Authority Rating from 0 to 100 across four measured areas, from outside, with nothing self-reported. This is the baseline everything afterwards is judged against.
  • Fix. Findings ordered by impact, each one named, located, and specified in enough detail to be executed by a developer or an agency without re-diagnosing it.
  • Rescore. The identical measurement run again after the work has been recrawled. The method has not changed between the readings, which is what makes the difference attributable.
What this approach does not claim
No guarantee of rankings, no guarantee of citations, and no guarantee that a score rises. What a rescore proves is that the measured conditions changed. Whether an independent AI system then behaves differently is that system's decision — and a vendor who promises otherwise is promising something they cannot observe.
Melbourne situations

How the shift lands on different teams

Agencies
A Melbourne performance agency has an SEO retainer under pressure because the client's traffic is flat while their rankings hold. Reframing the retainer around a measured Authority Rating gives the agency something to report that is not a position, and something to improve that the client can independently verify.
Professional services
A Melbourne engineering consultancy has a technically excellent site and almost no third-party corroboration of what it specialises in. Its SEO consultant has nothing left to optimise on-page; the remaining work is entirely about external evidence, which is an AEO problem wearing an SEO job title.
Ecommerce
A Melbourne retailer's category pages rank respectably and are never used as a source, because the substance a shopper would ask about — materials, sizing, provenance — is in tabs assembled after load. The fix is a content-form change, and it improves conventional search at the same time.
Hospitality
A hotel marketing manager is quoted for "GEO" by one supplier and "AEO" by another and cannot tell them apart. A measured baseline settles it: both proposals are aimed at the same two failing areas, and the score gives a way to judge either one afterwards.
Real estate
A Melbourne franchise group's individual offices each run their own site with inconsistent entity information. No amount of conventional SEO fixes an ambiguity problem, because the systems are not confused about relevance — they are confused about who the business is.
Questions

AI SEO questions

Is AI SEO different from AEO and GEO, or are they the same thing?
They overlap almost entirely. AI SEO is the umbrella term; answer-engine optimisation emphasises being the source an answer is built from; generative-engine optimisation emphasises systems that compose prose rather than return snippets. The underlying work — entity clarity, corroboration, retrievable and quotable content, and cleaning up contradictory information — is the same in all three.
Should I stop doing conventional SEO?
No. Most technical and content fundamentals carry over and several matter more now, because retrieval is less forgiving than ranking. What changes is the objective: a position on a list is no longer the same as being chosen, so position stops being a sufficient measure of success.
Can my existing SEO agency do this work?
Often yes, particularly on the technical and content side. What they usually lack is an independent measurement to work against, which is why an external Authority Rating is useful even when the work is done in-house or by an incumbent agency — it separates the diagnosis from the party being paid to fix it.
How do I know whether AI SEO work actually did anything?
By measuring the same conditions before and after with an unchanged method. That is what rescoring is for. Anything else — activity reports, screenshots of an assistant naming you once, changes in traffic that coincided with other work — is evidence of effort rather than of effect.
Does any of this help with Google's ordinary search results too?
Frequently, yes, because the underlying conditions overlap. Making content retrievable and answerable, resolving entity ambiguity and correcting inconsistent business information tend to help conventional search as well. That is a side effect rather than the goal, and it is not something to promise in advance.
Where should a Melbourne business start?
With a free reading, because it costs nothing and it replaces the debate with a number. If the rating is low, the findings underneath it will show whether the problem is technical, editorial or a matter of external evidence — and those three answers lead to very different pieces of work.
Replace the argument with a number.
