Gemini visibility,
and the control people misuse

Gemini the assistant and AI Overviews in Search are different surfaces, and the control most businesses reach for governs neither of the things they expect. Google-Extended is a robots.txt token covering whether your content is used to train Gemini models and for grounding in Google's generative products. Google states it does not affect Google Search inclusion, is not a ranking signal, and has no effect on AI Overviews. Setting it is a content-licensing decision, not an SEO one — and not setting it does not put you in Gemini.

The separation

Why "we blocked Gemini" usually means something else

A common sequence: a business decides it does not want its content training AI models, sets Google-Extended, and later asks why it is still summarised in Search — or, in the opposite direction, refuses to set it for fear of a ranking penalty. Both misunderstandings come from treating one token as a master switch for everything Google does with AI.

Google's documentation separates these deliberately. Training and grounding in Gemini products sit behind Google-Extended. Appearing in Search features, including AI Overviews, is governed by the ordinary Search controls — robots.txt and Googlebot directives, the preview controls, noindex. If you want to change what happens in Search, Google-Extended is not the lever.

What this means commercially
You can decline to have your content train Gemini models while remaining fully eligible for Google's search features. Those are genuinely independent decisions, which is unusually publisher-friendly and unusually widely misunderstood. OG01 reports what your current configuration permits so the choice is deliberate rather than inherited from a template someone pasted into robots.txt two years ago.
Being usable

What actually helps an assistant describe you

Google states that no special optimisation or structured data is required for its generative search features, and nothing in its documentation offers a Gemini-specific technique either. What remains is the ordinary, measurable substrate: whether your pages can be fetched and parsed, whether your organisation resolves to one entity, whether your claims are corroborated by sources that are not you, and whether anything stale or contradictory about you is in circulation.

Those four are what OG01 measures, and they are deliberately platform-independent — not because platform differences do not exist, but because the parts that differ are the parts nobody outside those companies can verify. Building a service on the unverifiable half would make the whole reading unfalsifiable.

Questions

Gemini questions

Does setting Google-Extended hurt my Google rankings?
Google states that Google-Extended does not affect a site's inclusion in Google Search and is not used as a ranking signal, and that it has no effect on AI Overviews. It governs whether content is used for training Gemini models and for grounding in Google's generative products, which is a licensing decision rather than a search one.
Is Gemini the same thing as AI Overviews?
No. Gemini is Google's assistant; AI Overviews is a feature inside Search. They are different surfaces with different controls, and the most common mistake in this area is setting a token that governs one while expecting it to change the other.
Is there a way to make Gemini recommend my business?
Not one anybody can document. Google does not publish how the assistant selects what to say about a business, so no supplier can promise placement or verify afterwards that they caused it. What can be improved are the conditions that make your business easy to understand and safe to repeat — and those can be measured before and after.
Should we allow or block Google-Extended?
That is a commercial decision about your content rather than a technical one, and it is genuinely yours. The useful part is knowing the trade-off is narrower than it looks: per Google's documentation, declining training and grounding does not cost you Search inclusion, ranking or AI Overviews eligibility. OG01 reports your current setting so the decision is made deliberately.
Do we need Gemini-specific structured data?
No such thing is documented. Google states no special structured data is required for its generative search features, and publishes no Gemini-specific markup. Structured data remains worth having because it states plainly what your organisation and pages are, which supports entity clarity everywhere rather than unlocking one product.
